Small is BIG Orange-breasted Waxbill

Vic Falls finish

On 19 February 2017 Eelco Meyjes, Rare Finch Conservation Group director and member of BirdLife South Africa, will attempt to do an unsupported 3600 km solo cycle ride (no back up support vehicle) from Cape Town to Namibia, across certain parts of the Namib Desert, through the Caprivi Strip and then onto northern Botswana and end at the mighty Victoria Falls. His target is to raise R300 000 for a conservation strategy that will include environmental education and a scientific study.  The small Orange-breasted Waxbill, can be viewed as a sentinel (watchdog) species that helps to save another eight threatened bird and 84 common bird species with similar habitat requirements. A small bird can be made into a BIG hero. For more information on how you can contribute, please download the RIDING FOR A PURPOSE document pdf here (1.03 MB) .
