Monitoring and assessing biodiversity on a regional level

What we do

We work with partners in the southern African region, including national governments, partner conservation organisations, and research institutions, to identify, map, monitor and safeguard sites of particular importance for biodiversity.

How we do it

Science: supporting scientific data collection and analysis to enable identification and mapping of important sites for waterbirds and other migratory birds in South Africa and along the African-Eurasian Flyway
Biodiversity status assessment and planning:
- Supporting South Africa and other African countries to conduct IUCN Red List assessments for species
- Identifying and mapping Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs)
- Incorporating this information into spatial biodiversity plans
Conservation action: coordinate South Africa’s participation in the African-Eurasian Flyway initiative and work with BirdLife Partners and other partners within the southern African region to establish and implement coordinated conservation actions focused on the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats
