Further Project Information

  • Participating in Birding Big Day is free and open to everyone, anywhere in South Africa. Form a team of up to six people, choose the 50 km or 6 km radius category, and select a central point around which you will bird on the day. Download the BirdLasser app (available for Android and iOS) and register your team on the BirdLife South Africa website before the event. On the day itself, simply head out and record every bird species you see or hear, logging your sightings through BirdLasser as you go. Your progress will appear on the live event leaderboard in real time.
There is no entry fee, but we encourage donations to help sustain the Science and Innovation Programme’s conservation work. Commemorative cloth badges are available to order through the BirdLife South Africa online shop, and sponsors generously contribute prizes for lucky draws and category winners. Full details, including the event date, registration form, and rules, are announced each year in the months leading up to BBD. Keep an eye on our website, social media channels, and the BirdLife South Africa e-newsletter for updates.
  • Birding Big Day sits at the intersection of citizen science, community engagement, and conservation. The event generates tens of thousands of bird records in a single day, collected simultaneously across every province in the country. This concentrated burst of standardised data is enormously valuable for tracking species distributions, detecting range shifts, and identifying areas of high bird diversity or conservation concern.
Because sightings are logged through BirdLasser, they flow directly into SABAP2, the atlas project that underpins much of South Africa’s bird conservation science. SABAP2 data have been instrumental in producing the Eskom Red Data Book of Birds of South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, assessing bird species’ threat statuses against IUCN criteria, and informing the National Biodiversity Assessment. Every BBD record strengthens these datasets.
Beyond the data, Birding Big Day builds a community of people who care about birds. It introduces new participants to citizen science, connects experienced birders with one another, inspires families and young people to explore the natural world, and raises both funds and awareness for bird conservation. Growing participation, with record numbers of teams registering year on year, reflects a public that is increasingly engaged with the future of South Africa’s birdlife.
  • Birding Big Day has grown steadily since its inception over four decades ago, and recent years have seen record-breaking participation. In 2025, a record 503 teams entered the event, 50 more than the previous highest year. Collectively, participants logged over 670 species and generated more than 62,000 individual bird records across the country in a single day.
The 2025 national champions, Team Hamerkop from Mpumalanga (Johan Eksteen, Duncan McKenzie, Lourens Grobler, and Ehren Eksteen), claimed their third consecutive title with an extraordinary tally of 322 species in the 50 km radius event. In the 6 km category, two teams tied for top honours with 234 species each, a remarkable total for such a small area. Provincial challenge winners spanned all nine provinces, from 322 species in Mpumalanga to 163 in the Northern Cape, reflecting the incredible diversity of South Africa’s birdlife across different biomes and landscapes.
The 2025 event also saw an exciting new partnership with RETURN Africa, who came on board as headline sponsor. Their generous sponsorship included a luxury stay at their Pafuri Collection in the Kruger National Park as a lucky draw prize, a fitting reward given that Pafuri is home to over 450 bird species and is widely regarded as one of the country’s premier birding destinations. Donations and sponsorship in 2025 raised over R91,000 for the Science and Innovation Programme.
