As the world’s largest nature conservation partnership, BirdLife International brings together over 124 independent national conservation organisations across continents in 119 countries. Including South Africa, 27 partners are in Africa and comprise the Birdlife Africa partnership. The value of this network lies in the recognition that the conservation of birds is a global endeavour and that addressing threats to vulnerable species and their habitats is key for policy and advocacy teams all over the world. Many of our birds in South Africa are palearctic or intra-African migrants so the protection of their flyways across boundaries is critical for their safe passage.

Regional and global engagement with key Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) is an important area of collaboration. Environmental Conventions and Agreements that the South African government is party to are also an important source of national law and policy. Our Policy and Advocacy Team and other staff, are a valuable partner to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) for preparation of positions, constitution of working groups, species action and implementation plans that are required in fulfilment of national commitments under key Conventions and Agreements, including the following:
